Honjin Ramen is a decent ramen place near Cineplex in south Coquitlam . It is a blessing to have a good ramen restaurant so close to my house!
I love shoyu ramen the most, and the ramen here didn’t disappoint me. The soup was made of both chicken and pork broth. The taste can be a bit heavy and oily for some people, but it was totally fine with me. They claimed that they handmade the noodles in the store. I really liked that they were a little bit firm. The toppings were pretty standard with bamboo shoots, chashu, egg, nori, and green onion. The extra bamboo shoots tasted great on their own because they were marinated with sesame oil. Overall, it was a solid bowl of ramen, and I think it is on par with the ramen in downtown Vancouver.
I tried their tantanmen during my second visit. It is also originated in China and has been adapted into Japanese flavour. It is now one of the iconic Chinese food in Japan.
It was my first time having this kind of noodles as they are not common in Vancouver. The soup was spicy (as expected) and blended with sesame paste. I don’t know if the locals are OK with such a rich flavour. The noodles were the same and tasted great here. The only toppings were green onions, bok choy, and some minced pork. With only once experience, I couldn’t tell if I like it or not. I do recommend it to anyone who wants to try new things or wants something spicy.
I also tried their light shoyu ramen. The only difference between this and the regular one is that the soup consists only chicken broth. As a result, the colour of the soup is darker. I didn’t like this broth at all because it was too light for me.
I think Honjin Ramen has been in the neighbourhood for quite some time. It is totally my fault not discovering it earlier! Now I have a very good place near my house to fulfill my craving for ramen!
