Buffet Da Pepi in Trieste is famous for the various kinds of boiled pork and meat. This cuisine is one of the legacies of the Austrian influence from the past.

My friend brought me to this restaurant. I almost missed it because I didn’t do any research on local food and didn’t expect that some local cuisines are very different from the Italian food I had before. I was fortunate that I had good classmates!
The restaurant serves 9 kinds of boiled meat and 8 of which are pork or made of pork. I felt sorry for our Muslim friend because he couldn’t really have any except for the veal tongue. The 9 kinds of meat are:
- Pork neck fillet
- Large pork sausage
- Pork loin
- Veal tongue
- Pork head meat
- Pork trotter/ear
- Krainer sausage
We ordered a mixed platter for 4 which came with 5 kinds of meats. We also got the sauerkraut and mashed potato on the side. I don’t remember exactly which kinds of meat we got, but they were all great with bread and sauerkraut.
Boiled meat is a must-have dish when visiting Trieste. It is one of the few ways to experience the legacy from the Habsburg period which ended in 1918. There are many other buffet restaurants in town, so feel free to visit any of them.
