[Europe Week 1] Ljubljana Castle

Our Slovenia day trip ended with a visit to Ljubljana Castle in the evening. It is the landmark of the city which can be dated back to 11th century.

Day Trip to Slovenia

What We Did

The castle is located on a hill in downtown Ljubljana. It was only a few blocks away from the restaurant where we had dinner. The hill is not steep at all, and everyone can easily walk up to the castle.

The Model

Comparing it to the Predjama Castle we visited earlier, Ljubljana Castle looks more like a fortress to me. It has a pentagon shape and a large courtyard in the middle. Its purpose was to defend the Austrian empire against Ottoman invasion as well as peasant revolt.

The castle is now a museum with various exhibits on Slovenian history and culture. We spent about two hours walking around and looking at the exhibits.

The Painting

The most memorable thing about the castle is the stunning view of the city. Ljubljana may be the smallest capital city on the continent, but I am sure it is one of the prettiest and greenest. There are no skyscrapers. All I saw was low-rise buildings with red roofs with a lot of trees in between. It was very different and unique.

The castle was the only attraction we visited in the city. It was too bad that we didn’t have time to explore other places. If you don’t have much time, I still recommend visiting the castle. You don’t want to miss out on the Slovenian culture and the great scenery of the city.
