I have passed through Kelowna before but never have enough time to explore the city. Thus, I brought my family to Kelowna and spent our Thanksgiving long weekend here. It was a laid back trip and I enjoyed it a lot. Below is my 3-day Kelowna Itinerary.
I booked the following hotels for our two nights in Kelowna.
- Fairfield Inn & Suites Kelowna – Guest room, 2 Queen – Free night certificate (max 25,000 points per night)
- Comfort Suites Kelowna – Suite, 2 Queen – 12,000 Choice points
I got a free night certificate after two stays in Seattle. It can be used for a 1-night stay at any category 1-4 (max 25,000 points per night) property. The rate for a night during the Thanksgiving weekend was about $200 CAD after tax. It is probably not the best place to use my certificate, but I am glad that I saved $200 cash.
I purchased 56,000 Choice points for $285 USD ($??? CAD) during the Daily Getaways promotion in May. Using 12,000 points for a night means that I only paid about $50, which is a spectacular value. The cash price for a night at Comfort Suites Kelowna was also about $200 CAD per night. As a result, I saved another ~$150.
This time, I needed to rent a car because winter tires are required to drive on BC Highways outside of Lower Mainland. I didn’t have winter tires on my car, and it was easier to rent than to buy new tires.
I chose to reserve a car directly with Hertz because of the Marriott promotion. I could earn 2,000 Marriott points on a rental of 2 – 4 days. I also got 10% off by using the Marriott’s discount codes.
I selected the cheapest car available, a Chevrolet Sonic, with a price of $126.59 for 3 days. It was a mistake as my mom and my sister were very dissatisfied with this small car. I learned my lesson and will rent a bigger vehicle next time.
One problem with my Kelowna trip was that there weren’t a lot of interesting places to see. Besides the lake and the wineries, I couldn’t think of a place to go. Fortunately, I discovered Myra Canyon Trestles, and it turned out to be the best place in our trip!
Day 1 (Sat, Oct 6)
- Dinner @ Mabui Sushi Izakaya
Day 2 (Sat, Oct 7)
- Snack @ Bliss Bakery
- Myra Canyon Trestles
- McMillan Farms
- The View Winery & Vineyard
- Dinner @ Bai Tong Thai Food
Day 3 (Sat, Oct 8)
- Waterfront Park
- Knox Mountain Park
- Quails’ Gate Estate Winery
- Lunch @ Old Vines Restaurant
I was happy that I finally revisited Kelowna. Although I had to do all the driving, the above itinerary was perfect and not tiring. Unfortunately, many restaurants were closed over the long weekend, so I missed a few highly-rated places. I am definitely going to take more 3-day trips in the coming years!
