Tex Drive-In is a local eatery in the Hamakua Coast area. I didn’t know that I could get Portugese deep-fried dough balls here on the Big Island!
Big Island Day 7 Itinerary
- [Breakfast] Cafe 100
- Downtown Hilo
- Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden
- [Snack] What’s Shakin
- Akaka Falls State Park
- [Snack] Tex Drive-in (This Post)
- Waipio Valley Lookout
The restaurant is located in the small town of Honokaa, which is the only town on the north shore of the Big Island. We had a break here after driving from Akaka Falls State Park. The drive was scenic, but there weren’t any destinations (except for Laupāhoehoe Beach Park that we didn’t visit) along the way. We were heading to Waipio Valley Lookout next, so the restaurant was the perfect stop.
We ordered a bowl of Portuguese soup and 2 malasadas, one without fillings and one with the custard filling. Malasada is a Portuguese style deep-fried doughnut that has become an iconic sweet in Hawaii. They were bigger and softer than normal donuts I had. Deep-fried doughnuts are not that common in Vancouver anymore, and these malasadas reminded me of the doughnuts I had in the distant past. They were delicious and addictive!
The eatery also offers other local Hawaiian dishes, including loco moco, burgers, teriyaki plates, and more with affordable prices.
I didn’t expect to have Portuguese food when travelling to Hawaii. If you are having a scenic drive in the area, I highly recommend you to come here and enjoy malasadas. It is a part of the Hawaiian culture experience!
